New gig!

I think I'm just going to altogether stop trying to be good at this, because then it's just one more thing for me to fail at. Franchement!

Anyways, I have a gig next Sunday, and all y'all who are in Toronto should stop on by for some cozy Sunday afternoon fun.

Here are the details:

I'm still alive - and have a new gig!

Well, I think I have officially become the worst blogger ever. So, a very quick update: since my last post, I have lost and renewed my faith in music, travelled to Halifax and Cape Breton, played a fun gig at Toronto Pride, continued to work through a very busy time at my day job, visited and had visits from friends and family, spent a long weekend in Montreal, and various other much more mundane things. So, there is clearly far too much to do a proper update, musical or otherwise, so I will go ahead with posting details about my upcoming gig at the Free Times Cafe in Toronto:

Songwriter-in-the-round
Wednesday, August 15th
8:30pm
$5 or PWYC
Free Times Cafe
320 College Street

Playing with Australian singer-songwriter Sarah Turk, and one other artist, TBA.

Come on out and eat some delicious latkes and listen to some delicious tunes! I'd love to see you there.

And hopefully I'll actually post about it afterwards. But I'm not making any promises.

L. xo.

Thanks, CBC!

The gig on Sunday went really well - the Tranzac was great to play at, and I hope to be able to play there again sometime soon.

The other exciting news I got came last night at choir rehearsal, when one of the women in my choir congratulated me on being played on CBC on the weekend. I, of course, had no idea that this had happened, but it turns out that I was in fact played on Saturday morning on Fresh Air. How exciting! I think this is my first time, too. Thanks, CBC. You totally made my day.

New Song: Flight Path / Year of Reunions (you choose!)

I sat all day under the flight path and thought of you / You’ve been gone for less than a week but already I don’t know what’s true /
We talk of our sad existence like I don’t know how the world existed before I met you and now that you’re gone I’m blue /
From the start you were something to leave but somehow I got confused / ‘cause it was the leaving that pulled me back, yeah, it was the leaving that brought me to you /
And all the planes here have me thinking ‘bout you and what it’ll be like when you’re back for good / Now we’re talking ‘bout leaving together and holing up somewhere deep in the woods /

And this will be our year of reunions / counting down the seconds ‘til you’re here to stay / I won’t tell you that I’m tired of waiting / I’ll just feign patience, sleep through the day /

We’ll close the curtains and turn off the lights here / imagine the world has ceased to exist / Batten down hatches, ignore all the phone calls / picture it as a forbidden tryst /
‘Cause all of the world is telling us to prove what we have is real / But I don’t know how to put down on a form what I feel /

And this will be our year of reunions / counting down the seconds ‘til you’re here to stay / I won’t tell you that I’m tired of waiting / I’ll just feign patience, sleep through the day /

Is it so terrible that I want to stay as far from the airplanes as I can? / Riding the subway all day from the airport then home again / And things are not as they seem as we become less and less real to each other / Telephone wires get buried too deep ‘til the voices are smothered /

And this will be our year of reunions / counting down the seconds ‘til you’re here to stay / I won’t tell you that I’m tired of waiting / I’ll just feign patience, sleep through the day //

New year

Well, as you may have noticed, I have moved my journal from a part of my website to a blog website. This is solely for ease of updating: no more will I have to actually upload new pages in order to update my journal. Hopefully this will mean more than one post every x number of months. I've moved all the old entries to this site (they are all under December 30th, because I don't think there's any way around that), and we're ready to start anew.

So, today is the first day of a new year. Frankly, it feels no different from yesterday, other than being the last day before I go back to work rather than the second last. But I do realize that there is, I suppose, Great Significance to the first day of a new year. I do have to admit to having amped up my planning process in the last few days, with a certain feeling of urgency around getting things done before midnight last night. I've decided that 2007 is the year that I really try to make a go of being a musician. Of course, nothing has actually changed from a few hours ago - I still have to work at the office full time, and spend time with people I love, and eat and sleep - but I think that I'm finally in a position to really try to make this work. For the first time in my adult life, I'm settled somewhere that I'm actually planning to stay for a while, which makes it worth investing in getting into the music scene. I am also constantly reminded that this is what I really want to do. And while it's really really hard sometimes to find the energy to come home after a day at work and work on a song, or write e-mails to radio stations, or try to network with other musicians, I really believe that it's worth doing and that it will lead towards me being able to at least try to make a living doing music. That goal is a long, long way off, but there are lots of stops on the way there, and I'm hoping to get to a few of them this year.

Anyways, that's my philosophical musing for the day. I hope that you are all having equally insightful New Year's Days (amazing what not getting trashed on New Year's Eve will allow my brain to do the next day!), and I wish you all the best for 2007. Here's to making things happen.
